Buildstore, the company that deals with self build and renovation projects, has seen a 30 per cent increase in self build mortgage offers in the three months to April compared to the same time last year.

The company believes that there is now a growing trend for building your own home as latest figures also show that there is a year-on -year increase in the number of mortgage completions.

The self build sector seems to be outperforming the sluggish wider housing market at current levels and the government has also disclosed that it will grow the sector to the same levels as other European countries, which can be up to five times larger than the UK market.

The government and the housing industry have also set up a self build working group that will develop policies to help boost growth in the country.
